Sugar Cookies with Powdered Sugar Icing

20 Dec

Sugar overload! These cookies are the absolute best sugar cookies in the world. I have lots of memories from childhood of rolling out dough and cutting out numbers for birthdays, candy canes and Christmas trees at the holidays, and racing to get icing on before it hardened.

I was inspired to make sugar cookies this holiday season by my new dachshund cookie cutter! So fun and tasty.

Sugar Cookies

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (2 sticks)
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 + ½ teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 4.5 cups flour
  • 1 + ½ teaspoons baking soda dissolved in 2T milk
  • 1 teaspoon Mexican vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon butter flavoring

Cream butter and sugar together and add eggs and flavorings; mix flour in with hands. Chill 1-2 hours after dividing into four balls and wrapping in plastic wrap. Sprinkle board with a mixture of half flour, half powdered sugar. Roll dough out, cut with cookie cutters. Bake 6-15 minutes (depending on cookie size – just watch and remove when bottoms and edges are golden) – at 350 degrees. Cool on racks and frost.

Icing

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter softened (half stick)
  • 4 cups sifted powdered sugar
  • 2 unbeaten egg whites
  • ¼ teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1-2 teaspoons light cream (half & half)
  • 1 teaspoon butter flavoring
  • Paste food color, if desired

Beat ingredients together with electric mixer. Spread quickly before it begins to harden. Merry Christmas!

Yum, I’ve been looking for a sugar cookie recipe (we’re having family over for cookie-making tomorrow night)! And seriously, is there anything cuter than dachshund-shaped things?
